Fancy Colored Diamonds: A New Hue Jewelers call them fancy colored diamonds. Women call them absolutely extraordinary. But one thing they agree on is that these spectacular stones, available in a range of hues, are more in-demand than ever. What colors are available? Diamonds come in a kaleidoscope of colors, ranging from clear pinks and yellows to more vibrant blues and greens. Brown, also referred to as champagne or cognac, is another shade growing in popularity. The most rare shade is a certified red. What gives a diamond its color? According to Eiseman diamond specialist Andre Vorster, natural fancy color diamonds get their coloring in several ways. It may be a result of different trace elements present in the stones, such as nitrogen, which leads to canary yellow, or boron, responsible for turning out rich blues. It may also come from exposure to radiation during the diamond's creation. Or color can be affected by inclusions in the stone; although undesirable in white diamonds, these "flaws" can give fancy colored varieties their unique tones or flashes of color. Why the growth in demand? Offering an irresistible option to more traditional white diamonds, colored stones are showing up in both bridal and fashion jewelry. For some women, it's the desire to have something unique; to break away from the norm with jewelry that makes an individual statement. Fancy colored diamonds have also become much more visible in the media. Stars are wearing them, they're being featured in fashion magazines and more key designers adding them to their collections. Any buying tips? Because colored stones are still slightly underpriced in the market (compared to white diamonds), Vorster says this presents a prime opportunity to acquire one of these richly-hued beauties. To help guide you through the process, let an Eiseman specialist explain how cut, clarity and carat weight affect the value of a fancy colored stone. We can also show you selections that cover the full fashion spectrum from classic styling to more avant-garde designs. |
