Up To the Minute: Trends in Timepieces

Today, watches do much more than just tell the time. They've graduated into significant pieces of jewelry. Here, Eiseman watch specialist John Lynch presents a go-to guide for what's new and noteworthy.

The Next Big Thing.
Larger cases remain important, not only for men's watches, but for ladies' as well. This increase ties to another trend—a new emphasis on complications in women's timepieces. The addition of a chronograph, moonphase or power reserve generally requires that the overall movement be larger, ultimately affecting case size.

Added Complications.
Watch for the tourbillon, a complicated feature where constant rotation compensates for the effects of gravity when the watch is in a vertical position. The result? Improved accuracy. Although invented over 200 years ago, more and more companies (including Breitling) are incorporating tourbillons into their current collections. Also new—the Jaeger-LeCoultre caliber 975, combining a precise, rugged, automatic winding movement with genuinely useful features such as date, second time zone and 24-hour indicator.

Romancing the Stone.
The always-important diamond watch increased its reign, with sportier styles joining the mix. (Check out Tag Heuer's options). At the same time, significant jewelry pieces continue to make news, with more dazzling designs than ever. And it's not just women going after these sparklers. Men are also adding diamond dress watches to their array.

In the Pink.
Rose-gold continues to be a strong fashion message. Getting its pink cast from a higher concentration of copper in the alloy, these timepieces include looks for both men and women. Cartier's Tankissime has instant elegance. Also for the ladies—pink faces and straps, from pale to deep rose, including Ulysse Nardin's Dual Time Lady.

More Newsmakers.
Dials displaying multiple time zones. Bigger windows for date figures. Square faces. Colored dials. Vintage-inspired styling.
