How should I take care of my diamond? And how often should it be cleaned and checked?

Because a clean diamond reflects light more efficiently, proper care is important to keep your stone looking its most brilliant. What causes a stone to look dull? Skin oils, soap, cosmetics, cooking grease, perfume, even hair spray can all be culprits.

We recommend bringing your diamond in to Eiseman's regularly for a professional cleaning. However, if you're doing some maintenance at home, use one of these two methods:

  1. Mix liquid detergent with water in a small bowl. While in the suds, brush gently with a soft toothbrush; rinse under warm running water. Pat dry with a soft cloth.

  2. Soak your diamond for 30 minutes in a half-and-half solution of cold water and household ammonia. Then, using a soft brush, tap gently around the mounting. Swish once more in the solution, then drain on paper.

Always store diamond jewelry separately in cloth pouches, individual jewelry cases or a fabric-lined box. This will prevent them from becoming scratched or damaged. Also, avoid allowing your jewelry to come in contact with harsh chemicals such as chlorine and bleach, which can cause gold to become brittle and prongs to fail.

We also recommend having your diamonds professionally inspected in our store at least once a year to guard against loose stones, damaged prongs or other signs of wear. At this time, we'll also be happy to professionally clean your jewelry.
