How often should my watch be serviced? And what actually happens when I take it in? Taking care of your watch is not unlike taking care of a car; even though it may be working properly, it still needs to be lubricated regularly to keep it running smoothly. In addition, oil can deteriorate, causing friction between the movement's parts. While manufacturers' recommendations vary, service on mechanical watches is advisable every three to five years. When a watch is serviced, the bracelet and case are cleaned ultrasonically and polished. Pieces of the movement are examined and chemically cleaned, and worn or defective pieces are replaced. The watch is then reassembled, lubricated and regulated. Because they have fewer moving parts (just the gears that move the hands), quartz watches need less ongoing care. As a general rule, when opened for a battery change, they should be cleaned of any accumulated dirt. When making the decision of where to purchase a timepiece, you'll want to choose a jeweler who will follow-through on any service or repair needs. |
