Eiseman Designer Spotlight: Julius Cohen

A native of Manhattan, Julius Cohen began his jewelry career as an apprentice at age 16 in 1929. He joined Harry Winston in 1942, where he was responsible for developing new markets, particularly in Texas. He traveled extensively throughout the United States meeting new customers and understanding the emotional involvement a jeweler can have both with his creations and with the families that acquire them.

In 1956, he set up his own label, Julius Cohen Jeweler, Inc., including a salon and workshop first on East 53d Street next to the Stork Club, then at 699 Madison Avenue near 62nd Street. Much of his business, however, was conducted at the homes of clients, who relied on Mr. Cohen to tailor jewelry to their tastes.

Julius’ passionate dedication to beauty, quality and integrity formed the basis of the company’s reputation. But, it was his sense of fun, charm and the celebration of life that came to define both the creative process and his customer relationships.

Working with a rainbow of precious stones and metals, Mr. Cohen created rings, earrings, glittering brooches, bracelets and necklaces that won many design awards, including the coveted Diamonds International Jewelry Design Award, which he won for several consecutive years.

His company was founded on the belief that creating a special relationship with each customer on a personal basis was the only way to do business. Julius Cohen Jewelry is among America’s most celebrated and award-winning jewelry design firms of the 20th century. Cohen’s unique, dedicated marketing style of visiting and servicing customers in their own homes or offices or the company’s Madison Avenue studio in New York remains the cornerstone of the business to this day.
