The History of Henry Dunay

Our Eiseman Estate Collection is a treasure trove of vintage jewelry by legendary designers who exemplify craftsmanship, quality and timeless style. One of these designers is Henry Dunay, a goldsmith and jeweler whose finely honed techniques and unique sensibility have made his pieces iconic to the generations of women who have worn and loved them.

The influential jewelry designer Henry Dunay began his swift rise to success at just 14 years old, when he began serving as a jewelry apprentice for a master goldsmith in New York. He quickly developed his own talent and passion, working his way up the ranks to become a master model maker and setter in his own right. In 1956, at the remarkably young age of 21, Dunay started his own company and began designing and selling his own jewelry. He built a team of the world’s finest artisans and stone cutters to implement his designs.

Dunay’s breakthrough came in 1967, when he won the first of three De Beers Diamonds International Awards for a carved gold, sapphire and diamond ring. The international recognition he gained from this exposure lead to a slew of commissions — including one for a gold chastity belt. He went on to win more than 50 international awards for his designs, including being chosen two times as “The Best of The Best Designer in the World” by The Robb Report Magazine.

Dunay’s works included the Faceted Collection, which consisted of gold pieces with many surfaces, achieved by creating deep cuts into the metal. His Cynnabar Collection was a tribute to Eastern Art. And he released a collection featuring semi-precious gemstones of various colors called Color-Me-Henry. But Dunay is perhaps most famous for his Sabi finish. Inspired by the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi, which emphasizes simple elegance, Dunay’s Sabi motif consisted of finely hand-etched lines in brushed gold that required remarkable precision and skill to create.

Over the course of his five decades as a designer and business owner, Dunay has always maintained a focus on beauty, craftsmanship and stone quality. He has said that in creating each one of his stunning one-of-a-kind-designs, he first found the perfect stone and then built the piece around it. Today, Henry Dunay is known for his bold designs, sensuous curves and signature finishes, and has secured his position in history as a designer, artist and innovator the world of fine jewelry.
