Traveling with Jewelry - Tips from Richard Eiseman

Summer and travel go hand in hand, and that means choosing the perfect jewelry to complete your vacation ensembles. Although planning your travel wardrobe can be fun, it’s also smart to consider safety before traveling with items of high value. Richard Eiseman offers these tips for keeping your most valuable pieces of fine jewelry safe on your summer travels.

Before you even begin packing, plan out which pieces you’re going to wear on your trip. Make a list of every piece you’re taking and keep one copy at home and one copy with you, but separate from the jewelry itself. It’s also a good idea to take pictures or video of what you’re packing.

Consult your insurance agent for recommendations and to review your jewelry insurance policy’s coverage, which may help determine the pieces you’ll take.

Commercial airport security can be a hassle, especially when you’re carrying valuables. Always pack valuables, including passports and currency, in the bottom of a carry-on that zips closed. Never pack jewelry in checked baggage. A high-quality jewelry travel roll is essential when it comes to packing your fine jewelry and timepieces.

When placing your bag on the security conveyor belt, do not walk through security or away from the belt until your bag has entered the X-ray machine. If the line is long, have your travel companion go through security first so your bag won’t be left unattended if it beats you to the other side. If security asks to search your bag, request a separate room to maintain the privacy of the contents of your bags.

Once you’re on the plane, keep your bag at your feet, where you can keep an eye on it all times. Once you arrive and are headed to your hotel, keep your bag with you, not in the trunk of your limo or taxi. When checking into your hotel, don’t hand your jewelry bag to the hotel staff — carry it yourself. Use your discretion as to whether it’s safest to keep your jewelry in a hotel safety deposit box, in the in-room safe or on your person. Keeping your jewelry with you tends to be safest, but if you’re not comfortable with that, consider dividing your possessions among the three to dilute a potential loss.
