computer-aided design

In the early days of jewelry making, designers would sit down with paper and pencil to sketch out a design, drawing and re-drawing until it was perfect. The drawing not only had to capture the beautiful design, but it also had to be completely accurate so it could be used in the process of hand-making the jewelry. If the designer wanted to create a slight variation on their original design, they would have to start the process over and create a new model from scratch.

Today, thanks to cutting-edge design technology, things are very different. CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer aided-manufacturing) are tools that generate traditional technical drawings on a computer and then manufacture the items designed on those computers. CAD creates three-dimensional models that allow designers to examine intricate designs up close from any angle, rotate and manipulate models onscreen just like a physical model, and even “weigh” the item before it’s constructed. CAM uses computer software and machinery to manufacture the products designed by CAD models.

What does all that have to do with jewelry design? A lot, it turns out. Here are some of the key benefits of using CAD/CAM systems in jewelry design.

  • CAD technology helps create designs that are both precise and complex — many of which would be almost impossible to do by hand.
  • With CAD, we can design pieces specifically for certain gem sizes, which helps increase accuracy, decrease errors, reduce production time and minimize the cost and waste of materials. In many cases, it minimizes the time taken up by trial and error and speeds up each step of the process.
  • If you aren’t happy with the way a piece of jewelry is progressing in the design stage, alterations and modifications can easily be made before the design is carried out. In the same vein, CAD allows us to see realistic images of virtual jewelry in its finished state before execution, making sure we get it just right.
  • It also gets you involved in the design process in a much more intimate way, which translates to a higher degree of personal expression in the custom-designed finished piece.
  • If your specially designed piece of jewelry happened to be lost or stolen, it can easily be recreated with your saved CAD file.

timepiece servicing

Luxury timepieces aren’t rendered obsolete when newer models are introduced. High-end watches are meant to be worn and treasured for decades. When they’re well cared for and serviced regularly, today’s watches will become tomorrow’s vintage classics.

Eiseman Jewels offers factory-authorized service either by our on-site watchmaker, our offsite workshop or through the manufacturer’s service centers in the USA or Switzerland.

No matter which of these avenues your watch takes to be serviced, the process is essentially the same. The watchmaker begins servicing your timepiece by disassembling the entire movement, inspecting each component and cleaning each piece thoroughly. Under magnification, each piece is inspected for damage, broken teeth on gears or bent parts, and damaged pieces are replaced as necessary. The case is checked for water resistance through the crystal and crown.

The movement is then reassembled, lubricated and tested for accuracy. While the movement is being tested, the outer parts will be cleaned and prepped for refinishing.

The case and bracelet are taped off to block the polishing wheel if it is not the proper wheel for a particular finish. This takes accuracy, skill and focus to ensure the edges and variations in finishing are just right.

The case is then sealed and water pressure-tested to ensure water resistance. This is carried out while the case is empty without a movement, just in case the resistance fails.

The timepiece is then carefully reassembled, with particular attention being paid to the reattachment of the hands to ensure proper calendar jumping. After full reassembly, the timepiece is rechecked for accuracy and cleaned by hand to remove any fingerprints or oils.

The timepiece is then ready to be returned to the client, beautifully serviced and refinished.

• There’s often a story behind a piece of heirloom jewelry or special memories of the family member to whom it once belonged. Sharing these stories with your jewelry designer will help inspire their work.

• Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Your designer has seen it all when it comes to estate jewelry. They can take your ideas and visualize a finished piece.

JB Star Interview

At Eiseman Jewels, our commitment to providing the very highest level of service, quality and expertise is evident in the jewelry designers we choose to stock, including JB Star. Every one of this brand’s stunning pieces is handcrafted in New York by highly trained artisans using only the finest diamonds and platinum, 18-karat yellow gold and pink gold.

We sat down with Rafael Fouzailoff, the founder, artistic designer and visionary leader of JB Star, to get his thoughts on wedding ring trends, inspiration and doing what he loves.

How did you get started in this industry?

My father, Yehuda Fouzailoff, has been in the diamond industry since 1946. He was one of the largest Sightholders in the world, with offices in Europe and the United States. I grew up around diamonds and learned a strong sense of the business from him. My goal, however, was to expand our company by designing and creating timeless, luxurious fine jewelry. Together with my brother Mark, who handles our loose diamond division, there is more than half a century of tradition and expertise behind JB Star.

What makes JB Star stand out in the jewelry industry?

Every JB Star creation is handmade in our facility in New York City. Each piece of jewelry is expertly crafted and inspected with the utmost care using the latest finishing technology, including lasers. No piece ever leaves the shop until even the finest details are examined, which ensures the highest standard of quality. We go above and beyond expectations to make one-of-a-kind creations that will be cherished for life.

What was the first piece designed at JB Star?

We started off making marquise diamond bands, which were unique to the market because of their sleek and elegant shape.

Where do you get your inspiration?

For me, inspiration comes from art, architecture and my travels around the globe. I am an avid believer in taking in my surroundings and implementing them into our creations. My vision has always been to stay ahead of the curve, but not go too far forward. I never build upon an existing fad. My pieces evolve from year to year so that they always maintain their integrity, yet look fresh and new.

What are your favorite wedding ring trends?

We love to emphasize unique cuts such as cushion cut, emerald cut and square emerald cut diamond shapes. These diamond shapes are unconventional but still wearable and timeless.

What is your favorite part about making jewelry?

To see the joy on a customer’s face when they purchase or receive my jewelry as a gift — that’s what it’s all about. It’s about crafting romance and creating dreams. Being a part of the celebration of love and life between two individuals drives us to be passionate. It’s our labor of love.

Lastly, what’s something we might not know about diamonds or diamond rings?

From a man’s perspective, sometimes it is hard to grasp why women revere diamond jewelry — the elegance of it and the feeling it provides them. We want to transcend that by educating the male customer and providing him with a high degree of service, education and quality assurance.
