Joys of Jade

A symbol of all that is good and precious in some cultures, jade is different than other types of valuable gems or precious metals. It is a metamorphic rock made up of tiny interlocking mineral crystals. The term “jade” actually refers to two separate gems: nephrite and jadeite. Modern gemologists use jade to describe both.

Jadeite comes in a wide range of beautiful colors: shades of green, yellow and reddish orange in addition to white, gray, black, brown and lavender. Nephrite’s colors range from translucent to opaque and can be light to dark green, yellow, brown, black, gray or white.

Ounce for ounce, jade is more valuable than gold — and that’s before you take into account the value of the piece’s antiquity. Jade is always appreciating in value.

Jade in Chinese Culture

“Gold has a price; jade is priceless.” —Chinese proverb

Nephrite was the first jade discovered in China, and it has been a symbol of status, spirituality, health and purity in Chinese culture for 9,000 years. Today, Chinese nephrite deposits are all but depleted, so most jade traded in modern China is jadeite. In a nod to tradition, however, every winning athlete’s medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics was embedded with a piece of pure nephrite jade.

Why We Love Jade

The way it interacts with light: Jadeite’s structure scatters light. If properly cut, a white piece with a small green spot will make the gem appear completely green if lit from behind.

The way it differs from other gems: Due to the way jade interacts with light, it is rarely faceted. Even semi-transparent jade is usually fashioned into cabochons, beads or other styles. It’s soft enough to carve yet durable, so the stone can be cut in unusual ways. Add this to the fact that rough jade can be quite large, and the result is often unique designs you won’t find in other jewels.

The way it rings: Nephrite rings like a bell when struck. Artisans have created chimes, xylophones and gongs from melodically resonant jade.

The Three Cs (and Two Ts) of Jade

  • Color: For both jadeite and nephrite, green is the most valued color. The finest jadeite — almost transparent with a vibrant emerald-green color — is known as “imperial jade.”
  • Cut: While jade is rarely faceted like other gems, plain as well as intricate jade carvings are judged by their artistry.
  • Carat weight: Jadeite is generally sold by the piece rather than by weight. For top-quality imperial jadeite, slight size differences can make for large value differences.
  • Transparency: Jadeite’s transparency ranges from completely opaque to semi-transparent. The best jadeite is semi-transparent.
  • Texture: Jadeite has a smooth, even texture that makes people want to touch and hold the gem.

At Eiseman Jewels, our commitment to providing the very highest level of service, quality and expertise to our customers is evident in the designers we partner with, including Messika. Messika’s reputation for exceptional stones, comfortable wearability and timeless yet contemporary design has been proven over and over again by their stunning pieces.

We sat down with Messika’s founder, designer and visionary leader, Valérie Messika, to find out what it was like growing up playing with diamonds, working on her latest collection with Gigi Hadid and partying in Paris for the launch.

Tell us about your latest collection, Move Addiction, which you created with Gigi Hadid.

messikaThe Messika by Gigi Hadid Collection adds rock and even punk accents to my original Move Collection, which just celebrated its 10th anniversary. The designs are strong, the cuts are clear and the shapes are striking. There are at least 16 pieces in pavé and non-pavé in rose, white and yellow gold. Earrings, endlessly transformable necklaces, a choker, rings and bracelets all reflect the strength of the Maison’s signature design.

What’s one word you would use to describe the collection?

Fashionable.

What was it like working with Gigi throughout the design process?

messika

I loved working with Gigi. She was very involved in the creative process — she followed each step of the fabrication. We drew the pieces together and then when she was in Paris, she would come to my atelier to see the evolution of the project. When she couldn’t be in Paris, I would travel to New York City to meet her and work on the details.

Gigi’s sense of detail and her discerning eye for fashion completely won me over. Her unparalleled professionalism and involvement with the Maison throughout the development process deeply inspired me. Gigi is the embodiment of the Messika woman. She is spontaneous, sunny, and bright.

What makes Move different from other Messika collections?

The Move Collection is, for me, a true symbol of love. When I was a little girl, my father, being one of the world’s top diamond dealers, would bring home some incredible diamonds and would let me play with them. He used to let the diamonds slide between his fingers. The three moving diamonds of my Move Collection were inspired by this memory from my childhood. This collection is my signature, my heritage.

Any favorite pieces in the collection?

The earrings! They are designed to look like a piercing — it appears as though the jewel itself runs through the earlobe.

Richard Eiseman said the Paris launch party for the collection was fantastic. Can you tell us a little more about it?

On September 27, we celebrated the 10th anniversary of my Move Collection with the launch of Messika By Gigi Hadid Capsule Collection in Paris. I had an amazing night surrounded by my family, friends and clients. Everything was perfect — people were laughing, dancing and drinking. Everyone was enchanted by the beauty of the Salomon de Rothschild, the food from chef Akrame, the Pierre Hermé Xl birthday cake and the music of Bob Sinclar! It was moments like those that make me wish I could stop time.
